# Codespace Assistant

NOTE: DO NOT DEPLOY THIS ASSISTANT OUTSIDE OF CODESPACES (OR LOCAL, BUT THIS HAS NOT BEEN TESTED)

This assistant is designed to help with development within the Semantic Workbench repo in Codespaces, and is not intended for deployment to production environments.

The Codespace Assistant is designed to help developers work within the **Semantic Workbench** repository, particularly in **GitHub Codespaces** and **VS Code**. It provides tools, guidance, and integrations to simplify coding, debugging, and interacting with your projects. While optimized for Codespaces, it can also be used in local environments with some caveats.

---

## Key Features

- **MCP Server Integration**:
  - Provides access to tools like the MCP filesystem and VS Code servers by default.
  - Additional tools (e.g., Bing Search, OpenAI integrations) can be enabled via configuration.
- **Content Safety and Guardrails**:
  - Integrated with Azure OpenAI and OpenAI APIs for responsible AI usage.
  - Includes prompts for instruction, guidance, and guardrails.
- **Codespaces Optimization**:
  - Ready to run directly within Codespaces for a streamlined developer experience.
  - Also supports local setups, but **Windows users must use WSL** due to Linux dependencies.

---

## Prerequisites

### Codespaces Development
- Follow the guide in [Optimizing for Codespaces](../../.devcontainer/OPTIMIZING_FOR_CODESPACES.md) to set up your environment.
- **Using VS Code Desktop**:
  - Open the workspace: `/workspaces/semanticworkbench/semantic-workbench.code-workspace`.

### Local Development
- Refer to [Setup Developer Environment](../../docs/SETUP_DEV_ENVIRONMENT.md) for full instructions.
- **Windows Users**:
  - Must host the repository in **WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux)** due to Linux library dependencies.

### Authentication
- You must authenticate with the Semantic Workbench using a **Microsoft or organizational account**. See [Workbench App Overview](../../docs/WORKBENCH_APP.md) for details.

---

## Setup Instructions

### Creating a Codespace
1. Go to the **Semantic Workbench** repository in GitHub.
2. Create a new Codespace.
3. Open the Codespace in **VS Code Desktop**.
   - Open the workspace file: `/workspaces/semanticworkbench/semantic-workbench.code-workspace`.

### Configure `.env` Variables
1. Navigate to the folder: `/assistants/codespace-assistant`.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Replace default values with your resource details for **Azure OpenAI** and **OpenAI** APIs.
   - **Azure**:
     - `ASSISTANT__AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT`: Azure OpenAI endpoint.
     - `ASSISTANT__AZURE_OPENAI_API_KEY`: Azure API key (use managed identities if possible).
     - `ASSISTANT__AZURE_CONTENT_SAFETY_ENDPOINT`: Azure Content Safety endpoint.
   - **OpenAI**:
     - `ASSISTANT__OPENAI_API_KEY`: API key for OpenAI.
     - `ASSISTANT__OPENAI_ORGANIZATION_ID`: Organization ID (optional).

### First Launch
1. Go to the **Debug** pane in VS Code.
2. Select `assistants: codespace-assistant (demo)`.
3. Start the assistant.
   - For more MCP servers, select `assistants: codespace-assistant (for dev)` (requires custom API keys).
4. Open your browser: [https://127.0.0.1:4000/](https://127.0.0.1:4000/).
   - Click "Advanced" > "Proceed to localhost" to bypass security warnings.
5. Create a conversation and add the assistant:
   - Provide a title.
   - Create a new assistant and select the Codespace Assistant service.
   - Start interacting with the assistant (e.g., ask questions about the repo).

---

## Extending Functionality

### Add Your Own Code
1. Open a terminal in VS Code.
2. Navigate to the `/workspaces` directory (default MCP filesystem server location).
3. Clone your repository or create a new folder.
   - Optionally, add it to the workspace using **File > Add Folder to Workspace**.

The assistant can now read, write, and edit your custom code.

---

## Additional MCP Servers (Advanced)

The `assistants: codespace-assistant (for dev)` debug configuration enables additional MCP servers not active by default. These servers can extend the assistant's functionality, but they require custom API keys to activate.

### Available MCP Servers

1. **Bing Search**:
   - **Command**: `http://127.0.0.1:6030/sse`
   - **Purpose**: Enables search capabilities via Bing.

2. **Open Deep Research**:
   - **Command**: `http://127.0.0.1:6020/sse`
   - **Purpose**: Facilitates deeper research workflows.

3. **Giphy**:
   - **Command**: `http://127.0.0.1:6000/sse`
   - **Purpose**: Fetches GIFs for use in conversations.

4. **Memory**:
   - **Command**: `npx @modelcontextprotocol/server-memory`
   - **Purpose**: Integrates a memory or knowledge graph system.

5. **Sequential Thinking**:
   - **Command**: `npx @modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking`
   - **Purpose**: Enables tools for sequential reasoning tasks.

### How to Enable Additional MCP Servers

1. Use the assistant configuration interface to enable these MCP servers directly. In the Semantic Workbench, navigate to the assistant's configuration panel, locate the MCP server settings, and toggle the desired servers on.
3. Check the `.env.example` file for each server's required API keys and configuration.
4. To enable a server, update the `.env` file with the necessary values and restart the assistant.

---

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

```markdown
# Chat Context Toolkit
The **Chat Context Toolkit** is a Python library designed to efficiently manage context for most AI agents.
It provides these three core, modular components:
- Message History Management: Applies context engineering techniques to ensure that messages fit within a token budget.
- Archive: A task for archiving and processing chunks of the message history that may no longer fit within a token budget to ensure older data can still be considered.
- Virtual Filesystem: Creates a common abstraction for LLMs to read, edit, and explore files coming from a variety of disparate sources.
## Key Features
### History Management
The primary goal of history management is to ensure that a list of messages is guaranteed to be under a token limit
and to provide a framework for common prompt engineering techniques to optimize how the messages are reduced to fit within a token budget.
In the default case, this algorithm is equivalent to the commonly implemented truncation of oldest messages,
but a user can configure abbreviations which allow for fine-grained control over how message contents can be reduced, rather than eliminated.
For example, the results of "data" tools, such as ones that query external sources like the web or a database,
are usually only important until they are "consumed" by a user asking questions or incorporating the results into something else like a document.
Thus, a common abbreviation for a tool message like this might be: `The content of this tool call result has been removed due to token limits. If you need it, call the tool again.`
![](./assets/history_v1.png)
### Archiving
Removing messages from history may be removing valuable data required to effectively address a user’s task.
We address this by asynchronously storing and extracting important content from chunks of the conversation into a configurable summary.
The original files could be later retrieved by the model (see the following section on the Virtual Filesystem),
and the summaries could be used as a form of memory system (although we do not prescribe this – it is up to the user of the library to decide what they want to use the summary for).
![](./assets/archive_v1.png)
### Virtual File System
Files are often large, and users usually have many of them that they create, add, or get created as part of working with an agent.
These files might come from different sources, but to the model it is unnecessary, confusing, or detrimental to present them in different ways.
To solve for this the virtual filesystem provides the following:
- A cohesive view of all types of varied data (generated documents, uploaded files, old message histories, etc.) optimized for the model’s understanding.
- Default tools for retrieval and exploration of that data as one cohesive aggregation of files.
- A mechanism for editing files that we define as editable.
## Project Structure
### `archive` Module
Handles the archival of message histories into summarized chunks for long-term storage:
- **`_archive.py`**: Core archiving logic with `ArchiveTask` for periodic archiving and `ArchiveReader` for retrieving archived content.
- **`_state.py`**: Manages the archive's persistent state using configurable storage providers.
- **`_types.py`**: Defines archival data structures, protocols, and configurations including `ArchiveContent`, `ArchiveManifest`, `ArchivesState`, and provider protocols.
### `history` Module
Manages in-memory history for active sessions and ensures prioritization within token budgets:
- **`_history.py`**: Core functionality with `apply_budget_to_history_messages` for token-constrained message processing.
- **`_prioritize.py`**: Logic for pairing and prioritizing messages (e.g., tool calls and results).
- **`_budget.py`**: Ensures that token usage remains within the defined budget through abbreviation and truncation.
- **`_decorators.py`**: Utility decorators for performance logging and timing.
- **`_types.py`**: Type definitions specific to history management including protocols and data structures.
### `virtual_filesystem` Module
Provides a virtual file system abstraction for LLM interaction with files from multiple sources:
- **`virtual_filesystem.py`**: Core `VirtualFileSystem` class that manages file source mounts and provides tools for LLM interaction.
- **`types.py`**: Type definitions including `FileSource`, `DirectoryEntry`, `FileEntry`, and `WriteToolDefinition` protocols.
- **`README.md`**: Detailed documentation on the virtual file system concept and implementation.
```python
from chat_context_toolkit.history import (
    apply_budget_to_history_messages,
    NewTurn,
    HistoryMessageProvider,
    TokenCounter
)

# Create a token counter function
def token_counter(messages):
    # Implement your token counting logic
    return sum(len(msg.get("content", "")) for msg in messages)

# Create a message provider function
async def message_provider(after_id=None):
    # Implement your message retrieval logic
    # Return a sequence of HistoryMessageProtocol objects
    return your_messages

# Apply token budget to message history
turn = NewTurn(high_priority_token_count=5000)
messages = await apply_budget_to_history_messages(
    turn=turn,
    token_budget=10000,
    token_counter=token_counter,
    message_provider=message_provider,
)
```
### Example 2: Archiving Messages
```python
from chat_context_toolkit.archive import ArchiveTask, ArchiveTaskConfig

# Initialize archiving task
archive_task = ArchiveTask(
    storage_provider=your_storage_provider, # Must implement StorageProvider protocol
    message_provider=your_message_provider, # Must implement MessageProvider protocol
    token_counter=your_token_counter, # Must implement TokenCounter protocol
    summarizer=your_summarizer, # Must implement Summarizer protocol
)

# Start archiving with custom configuration
config = ArchiveTaskConfig(
    message_poll_interval_seconds=300,  # Poll every 5 minutes
    chunk_token_count_threshold=50000 # Archive when chunk exceeds 50k tokens
)
task, trigger_fn = archive_task.start(config=config)

# Optionally trigger archiving manually
trigger_fn()
```
### Example 3: Reading Archived Messages
```python
from chat_context_toolkit.archive import ArchiveReader

# Create archive reader
reader = ArchiveReader(
    message_provider=your_message_provider,
    storage_provider=your_storage_provider,
)

# Get archive state
state = await reader.get_state()
print(f"Most recent archived message: {state.most_recent_archived_message_id}")

# List all archived chunks
async for manifest in reader.list():
    print(f"Archive: {manifest.summary}")
    print(f"Messages: {len(manifest.message_ids)}")
    print(f"Date range: {manifest.timestamp_oldest} to {manifest.timestamp_most_recent}")

# Read specific archive content
content = await reader.read("archive_filename.json")
if content:
    print(f"Found {len(content.messages)} messages in archive")
```
### Example 4: Virtual File System
```python
from chat_context_toolkit.virtual_filesystem import VirtualFileSystem
from openai import OpenAI

# Create and configure virtual file system
vfs = VirtualFileSystem()
vfs.mount("/docs", your_file_source)  # Must implement FileSource protocol

# Get tools for OpenAI chat completion
tools = list(vfs.tools.values())

# Use with OpenAI chat completion
client = OpenAI()
messages = [
    {"role": "system", "content": "You have access to files through the virtual file system. Use the ls and view tools to explore and read files."},
    {"role": "user", "content": "What files are available in /docs?"}
]

response = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="gpt-4",
    messages=messages,
    tools=tools
)

# Execute tool calls from the response
if response.choices[0].message.tool_calls:
    for tool_call in response.choices[0].message.tool_calls:
        result = await vfs.execute_tool(tool_call)
        print(f"Tool {tool_call.function.name} result: {result}")
```
# Semantic Workbench
Semantic Workbench is a versatile tool designed to help prototype intelligent assistants quickly.
It supports the creation of new assistants or the integration of existing ones, all within a
cohesive interface. The workbench provides a user-friendly UI for creating conversations with one
or more assistants, configuring settings, and exposing various behaviors.
The Semantic Workbench is composed of three main components:
- [Workbench Service](workbench-service/README.md) (Python): The backend service that
  handles core functionalities.
- [Workbench App](workbench-app/README.md) (React/Typescript): The frontend web user
  interface for interacting with workbench and assistants.
- [Assistant Services](examples) (Python, C#, etc.): any number of assistant services that implement the service protocols/APIs,
  developed using any framework and programming language of your choice.
Designed to be agnostic of any agent framework, language, or platform, the Semantic Workbench
facilitates experimentation, development, testing, and measurement of agent behaviors and workflows.
Assistants integrate with the workbench via a RESTful API, allowing for flexibility and broad applicability in various development environments.
# Quick start (Recommended) - GitHub Codespaces for turn-key development environment
GitHub Codespaces provides a cloud-based development environment for your repository. It allows you to develop, build, and test your code
in a consistent environment, without needing to install dependencies or configure your local machine. It works with any system with a web
browser and internet connection, including Windows, MacOS, Linux, Chromebooks, tablets, and mobile devices.
See the [GitHub Codespaces / devcontainer README](.devcontainer/README.md) for more information on how to set up and use GitHub Codespaces
with Semantic Workbench.
## Local development environment
See the [setup guide](docs/SETUP_DEV_ENVIRONMENT.md) on how to configure your dev environment. Or if you have Docker installed you can use dev containers with VS Code which will function similarly to Codespaces.
## Using VS Code
Codespaces will is configured to use `semantic-workbench.code-workspace`, if you are working locally that is recommended over opening the repo root. This ensures that all project configurations, such as tools, formatters, and linters, are correctly applied in VS Code. This avoids issues like incorrect error reporting and non-functional tools.
Workspace files allow us to manage multiple projects within a monorepo more effectively. Each project can use its own virtual environment (venv), maintaining isolation and avoiding dependency conflicts. Multi-root workspaces (\*.code-workspace files) can point to multiple projects, each configured with its own Python interpreter, ensuring seamless functionality of Python tools and extensions.
### Start the app and service
- Use VS Code > `Run and Debug` (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+D) > `semantic-workbench` to start the project
- Open your browser and navigate to `https://127.0.0.1:4000`
  - You may receive a warning about the app not being secure; click `Advanced` and `Proceed to localhost` to continue
- You can now interact with the app and service in the browser
### Start an assistant service:
- Launch an example an [example](examples/) assistant service:
  - No llm api keys needed
    - Use VS Code > `Run and Debug` (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+D) > `examples: python-01-echo-bot` to start the example assistant that echos your messages. This is a good base to understand the basics of building your own assistant.
  - Bring your own llm api keys
    - Use VS Code > `Run and Debug` (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+D) > `examples: python-02-simple-chatbot` to start the example chatbot assistant. Either set your keys in your .env file or after creating the assistant as described below, select it and provide the keys in the configuration page.
## Open the Workbench and create an Assistant
Open the app in your browser at [`https://localhost:4000`](https://localhost:4000). When you first log into the Semantic Workbench, follow these steps to get started:
1. **Create an Assistant**: On the dashboard, click the `New Assistant` button. Select a template from the available assistant services, provide a name, and click `Save`.
2. **Start a Conversation**: On the dashboard, click the `New Conversation` button. Provide a title for the conversation and click `Save`.
3. **Add the Assistant**: In the conversation window, click the conversation canvas icon and add your assistant to the conversation from the conversation canvas. Now you can converse with your assistant using the message box at the bottom of the conversation window.
   ![Open Conversation Canvas](docs/images/conversation_canvas_open.png)
   ![Open Canvas](docs/images/open_conversation_canvas.png)
Expected: You get a response from your assistant!
Note that the workbench provides capabilities that not all examples use, for example providing attachments. See the [Semantic Workbench](docs/WORKBENCH_APP.md) for more details.
# Developing your own assistants
To develop new assistants and connect existing ones, see the [Assistant Development Guide](docs/ASSISTANT_DEVELOPMENT_GUIDE.md) or any check out one of the [examples](examples).
- [Python example 1](examples/python/python-01-echo-bot/README.md): a simple assistant echoing text back.
- [Python example 2](examples/python/python-02-simple-chatbot/README.md): a simple chatbot implementing metaprompt guardrails and content moderation.
- [Python example 3](examples/python/python-03-multimodel-chatbot/README.md): an extension of the simple chatbot that supports configuration against additional llms.
- [.NET example 1](examples/dotnet/dotnet-01-echo-bot/README.md): a simple agent with echo and support for a basic `/say` command.
- [.NET example 2](examples/dotnet/dotnet-02-message-types-demo/README.md): a simple assistants showcasing Azure AI Content Safety integration and some workbench features like Mermaid graphs.
- [.NET example 3](examples/dotnet/dotnet-03-simple-chatbot/README.md): a functional chatbot implementing metaprompt guardrails and content moderation.
## Starting the workbench from the command line
- Run the script `tools\run-workbench-chatbot.sh` or `tools\run-workbench-chatbot.ps` which does the following:
  - Starts the backend service, see [here for instructions](workbench-service/README.md).
  - Starts the frontend app, see [here for instructions](workbench-app/README.md).
  - Starts the [Python chatbot example](examples/python/python-02-simple-chatbot/README.md)
## Refreshing Dev Environment
- Use the `tools\reset-service-data.sh` or `tools\reset-service-data.sh` script to reset all service data. You can also delete `~/workbench-service/.data` or specific files if you know which one(s).
- From repo root, run `make clean install`.
  - This will perform a `git clean` and run installs in all sub-directories
- Or a faster option if you just want to install semantic workbench related stuff:
  - From repo root, run `make clean`
  - From `~/workbench-app`, run `make install`
  - From `~/workbench-service`, run `make install`
# VSCode MCP Server
## Overview
The **VSCode MCP Server** is a VSCode extension that acts as a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server integrated directly within VSCode. Its primary purpose is to expose a coding diagnostic tool—namely, the `code_checker`—which aggregates diagnostic messages (similar to those displayed in VSCode’s Problems panel) and makes them accessible to an external AI assistant via Server-Sent Events (SSE). This allows your assistant to invoke MCP methods and retrieve timely diagnostic information from your workspace.
## Features
-   **Automatic Startup:**
    The extension activates automatically on VSCode startup (using `"activationEvents": ["*"]` in `package.json`), ensuring the MCP server is always running without manual intervention.
-   **MCP Server Integration:**
    Built using the MCP TypeScript SDK (`@modelcontextprotocol/sdk`), the extension instantiates an MCP server that registers diagnostic tools and handles MCP protocol messages.
-   **Diagnostic Tool (`code_checker`):**
    The registered `code_checker` tool collects diagnostics from VSCode’s built-in language services, filtering out files without errors. When invoked, it returns a formatted JSON object containing diagnostic information (only for files with issues).
-   **Focus Editor Tool (`focus_editor`)**: Opens a specific file in the VSCode editor and navigates to a designated line and column. Useful for bringing files into visual focus for the user but does not include file content in the tool call result.
-   **Search Symbol Tool (`search_symbol`)**: Searches for symbols in the workspace, using "Go to Definition" primarily, with a fallback to text search (similar to Ctrl+Shift+F). Can optionally open the results in the editor using the `focus_editor` tool.
-   **Debug Session Management Tools:**
    The extension provides tools to manage VSCode debug sessions directly using MCP:
    -   `list_debug_sessions`: Retrieve all active debug sessions in the workspace.
    -   `start_debug_session`: Start a new debug session with the provided configuration.
    -   `stop_debug_session`: Stop debug sessions matching a specific session name.
    -   `restart_debug_session`: Restart a debug session by stopping it and then starting it with the provided configuration (new!).
-   **SSE Communication:**
    An Express-based HTTP server runs on a configurable port (default: 6010) and dynamically handles port conflicts. It exposes:
    -   A **GET `/sse`** endpoint to establish a long-lived Server-Sent Events (SSE) connection. If the default port (6010) is unavailable, users can configure a new one via their VSCode settings (see Dynamic Port Configuration below).
    -   A **POST `/messages`** endpoint for receiving MCP messages from external clients (such as your AI assistant).
        Special care is taken to handle the request body properly—thanks to passing the already-parsed `req.body` to avoid stream-related errors.
-   **Verbose Logging:**
    All activity, including server startup, SSE connection status, and message handling events, is logged to an output channel named **"VSCode MCP Server"** to aid debugging and transparency.
## Using the Extension from Claude Desktop (MCP Client)
To use the VSCode MCP Server with Claude Desktop, you need to configure Claude Desktop to connect to the MCP server running in VSCode. Since the implementation of the MCP server uses SSE transport, and Claude Desktop only supports stdio transport, you need to use a [mcp-proxy](https://github.com/sparfenyuk/mcp-proxy) to bridge the communication between the two.
1. **Install MCP Proxy:**
    - Option 1: With uv (recommended)
        ```
        uv tool install mcp-proxy
        ```
    - Option 2: With pipx (alternative)
        ```
        pipx install mcp-proxy
        ```
2. **Configure Claude Desktop:**
    - Open Claude Desktop and navigate to the **File** > **Settings** > **Developer** tab.
    - Click **Edit Config** to open the config file, launch your desired editor to modify the config file contents.
    - Add a new entry to **mcpServers** with the following details:
        ```json
        {
            "mcpServers": {
                "vscode": {
                    "command": "mcp-proxy",
                    "args": ["http://127.0.0.1:6010/sse"]
                }
            }
        }
        ```
3. **Restart Claude Desktop:**
    - You **must** restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect by using the **File** > **Exit** option.
    - NOTE: This is different than just closing the window or using **File** > **Close**, which leaves the application running in the background.
    - After existing and then starting again, Claude Desktop should now be able to connect to the MCP server running in VSCode.
## MCP Server Management
The MCP Server status can now be managed directly from the Command Palette:
1. **Stop MCP Server** (`mcpServer.stopServer`): Stops the currently running MCP Server.
2. **Start MCP Server** (`mcpServer.startServer`): Starts the server on the configured or next available port.
These commands help manage server lifecycle dynamically, without requiring a VSCode restart.
## Dynamic Port Configuration
If the port is already in use, the extension will suggest the next available port and apply it dynamically. Logs reflecting the selected port can be found in the **MCP Server Logs** output channel.
Users can configure or change the MCP Server's port at runtime using the Command Palette:
1. Open the Command Palette (`Ctrl+Shift+P` or `Cmd+Shift+P` on macOS).
2. Search for `Set MCP Server Port`.
3. Enter the desired port number in the input box and confirm.
The server will dynamically restart on the newly selected port, and the configuration will be updated for future sessions.
The HTTP server port can also be set via VSCode settings:
1. Open VSCode settings (`File > Preferences > Settings` or `Ctrl+,`).
2. Search for `mcpServer.port`.
3. Set your desired port number.
4. Restart VSCode for the changes to take effect.
## MCP Server Automatic Startup
The MCP Server starts automatically on VSCode activation by default. To disable this feature:
1. Open VSCode settings (`File > Preferences > Settings` or `Ctrl+,`).
2. Search for `mcpServer.startOnActivate`.
3. Toggle the setting to `false`.
This can be useful if you prefer to start the server manually using the `Start MCP Server` command.
## Extension Development
Steps for developing and debugging the extension, source code available at [GitHub](https://github.com/microsoft/semanticworkbench/tree/main/mcp-servers/mcp-server-vscode).
### Prerequisites
1. **Clone the Repository:**
   Clone the Semantic Workbench repository to your local machine:
    ```bash
    git clone https://github.com/microsoft/semanticworkbench.git
    ```
2. **Navigate to the Project Directory:**
    ```bash
    cd semanticworkbench/mcp-servers/mcp-server-vscode
    ```
3. **Install Dependencies:**
   Ensure you have Node.js (v16 or higher) and pnpm installed. Then, from the project directory, run:
    ```bash
    pnpm install
    ```
4. **Package the Extension:**
   To package the extension, execute:
    ```bash
    pnpm run package-extension
    ```
    This will generate a `.vsix` file in the project root.
### Installing the Extension Locally
1. **Open Your Main VSCode Instance:**
    Launch your main VSCode (outside the Extension Development Host).
2. **Install the VSIX Package:**
    - Press Ctrl+Shift+P (or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS) to open the Command Palette.
    - Type and select "Extensions: Install from VSIX...".
    - Navigate to and select the generated .vsix file.
3. **Reload and Verify:**
    After installation, reload VSCode (via "Developer: Reload Window" from the Command Palette) and verify that the extension is active. Check the "MCP Server Logs" output channel to see logs confirming that the MCP server has started and is listening on the configured port (default: 6010, or the next available one).
### Debugging the Extension
1. **Start Debugging:**
   Open the project in VSCode, then press **F5** to launch the Extension Development Host. This will automatically activate the extension based on the `"activationEvents": ["*"]` setting.
2. **MCP Server Operation:**
   On activation, the extension:
    - Starts the MCP server which registers the `code_checker` tool.
    - Sets up an Express HTTP server on port **6010** with:
        - **GET `/sse`:** To establish an SSE connection (external clients connect here).
        - **POST `/messages`:** To process incoming MCP protocol messages.
    - Outputs all activity to the **"MCP Server Logs"** channel (which will be auto-shown).
### Installing the Extension Locally
    After installation, reload VSCode (via "Developer: Reload Window" from the Command Palette) and verify that the extension is active. Check the "MCP Server Logs" output channel to see logs confirming that the MCP server has started and is listening on port 6010.
## Testing the MCP Server
You can use `curl` to test the service:
### Step 1: Establish the SSE Connection
Open Terminal 1 and run:
```bash
curl -N http://127.0.0.1:6010/sse
```
You should see output similar to:
```
event: endpoint
data: /messages?sessionId=your-session-id
```
### Step 2: Send an Initialization Request
In Terminal 2, using the session ID obtained from Terminal 1 (if needed), send a POST request (include any required fields such as workspace if necessary):
```bash
curl -X POST "http://127.0.0.1:6010/messages?sessionId=your-session-id" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "method": "initialize",
  "id": 0,
  "params": {
    "protocolVersion": "2024-11-05",
    "capabilities": {
      "roots": { "listChanged": true }
    },
    "clientInfo": {
      "name": "mcp",
      "version": "0.1.0"
    },
    "workspace": {
      "folders": []
    }
  }
}'
```
If everything is configured correctly, the MCP server should process your initialization message without errors.
# Python tools
- `uv` for dependency management
- `uv run` to run python or project scripts
- `make format` to format code
- `make lint` to run linters
- `make type-check` to run type checks
# Guidance
- After making changes, run `make format`, `make lint` and `make type-check` to ensure code quality.
- Use `uv run` to execute scripts or tests.
- For dependency management, use `uv` to add or update packages.
- In complicated `if` statements with more than 2 conditions, assign the result of the condition to variables first, then use that variable in the `if` statement for better readability.
- Instead of `elif` statements, use `match` statements for better readability and maintainability.
## Writing tests
- _Do not_ write a test that tests a mock or a stub.
- _Do not_ write tests that validate that data structures set fields properly, like the init call of a class, BaseModel or dataclass.
- _Do_ write tests that validate the behavior of functions
